Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, born February 2, 1977, known simply as Shakira, is a Colombian Latin pop singer-songwriter. Shakira began writing and composing music at the age of eight. Between the ages of ten to thirteen, Shakira was invited to various events in Barranquilla, and gained some recognition in the area. Magia was Shakira's debut album, recorded with Sony Colombia in 1991, when she was 15. After Magia, Shakira released Peligro in 1993. Shakira returned to recording in 1995 and made her third studio album, Pies Descalzos. Pies Descalzos sold more than 4 million copies. In August of 2000 Shakira won an MTV Video Music Award in the now-defunct category of People's Choice - Favorite International Artist.
