In the New York slnaders first season, the young and inexperienced expansion team was one of the worst teams in NHL history, winning only 12 games and tying 6, while losing 60. In 1975, the New York Islanders made one of the biggest turnarounds in NHL history. The New York Islanders earned 88 points, 32 more than the previous season, and earned their first playoff berth. The 1978-79 New York Islanders would earn the best regular-season record in the league. In 1980, the New York Islanders dropped below the 100-point mark for the first time in five years, with only 91 points, but would go on to win the first of 4 straight Stanley Cups. The New York Islanders remained competitive for the rest of the decade, winning one of the most famous games in NHL history in the 1987 playoffs.
