Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov
is a Soviet-born American dancer, choreographer, and actor. Mikhail Baryshnikov (whose name is sometimes transliterated as Baryshinikov or Barishinikov) was born to Russian parents in Riga, in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union. In 1963, during a visit to Leningrad, Mikhail Baryshnikov applied to the famous Vaganova Ballet Academy. That same year, Mikhail Baryshnikov received the gold medal at the first international ballet competition in Moscow and also the Nijinsky Award. From 1974 to 1979, Mikhail Baryshnikov was principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), where he partnered with Gelsey Kirkland.
