The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, staged annually in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May. On May 3, 1952, the first national television coverage of the Kentucky Derby took place. The fastest time ever run in the Kentucky Derby, at its present distance, is 1 minute 59 2/5 seconds, by Secretariat in 1973. The 2004 Kentucky Derby marked the first time that jockeys were allowed to wear corporate advertising logos on their clothing. The Mint Julep is the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby.
