The Florida Gators originally competed in the Southern Conference, and in 1933 joined several other Southern Conference members in the new Southeastern Conference. In 1996, the Florida Gators, led by Steve Spurrier and quarterback Danny Wuerffel, won their first national championship. While the Florida Gators are no longer at the same level of dominance it enjoyed under Spurrier, it still consistently posts highly successful seasons.
